The Ultrasound Tech operates and executes Ultrasound procedures with expert knowledge of the capability of each Ultrasound unit and the ability to perform any and all Ultrasound procedures expertly. This includes skills in operating and performing various tasks in preparing, executing, and completing procedures within their ultrasound environment. This would include proper order review, basic and advanced ultrasound skills, and excellent patient care.

Education
Required: Graduate either from an AMA approved program, an accredited ultrasound program, or completion of equivalent course work, and two to three years of ultrasound training in his/her specialty.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential
Performs ultrasound examinations, operating equipment according to procedure, scanning patient, and obtaining clear precise images for radiologist interpretation. Quality scans completed no need for exams to be completed.
Thoroughly explains to patient the exam to be performed.
Obtains and records all pertinent clinical information prior to exam. Always ensures that an adequate clinical history is available to correlate with the ultrasound exam being performed. Regularly consults with others as necessary to obtain a complete clinical history.
Provides protection according to prescribed safety standards. Always inspects all equipment for physical, electrical and mechanical hazards and reports all hazards promptly.
Prevents cross contamination, using appropriate means. Always keeps work area clean and in a sanitary condition, disinfects all exposed surfaces after use. Follows infection control procedures as set forth in manual.
May assist in procedures not routinely taught.
Attends departmental staff and technologist meetings routinely.
Attends educational seminars as staffing allows and reports education gained to manager.
Develops film using automatic processor if using film. Sends images to PACS when appropriate. Is familiar with and able to assist physicians in viewing images on PACS.
Develops and maintains good working relationships with all members of the hospital, medical staff, and community.
Assists in administering first aid as necessary. Maintains current Basic Life Support certification.
Exams are completed and patients transferred in a timely manner.
Utilizes time in an efficient manner. Consistently on time and ready to work, does not require wake up time.
Assists other members of the shift with patient assignments.
Fully understands and complies with ensuring proper security of medications.
May have access to cabinets that house emergency medication kits, contrast reaction kits, commercially prepared kits, and medications that are provided to licensed personnel authorized to administer.
Responsible for maintaining PAR Levels and currency of dates on supplies and medications they stock.
Additional
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area. Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs. Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.
